“blublabluuh?” I asked confidently through my snorkel. “Yeah, sure, Nathan.” My brother responded. We were night snorkeling in the Red Sea. Around 8 pm it had gotten dark. As we swam the current pulled us south, away from the shore in front of our beloved “Sea View Hotel.”
Dahab is a small city in Egypt that boarders the red sea. With sun cream topping out at 35 dollars for 150 ml and internet cafe’s on every block, this town, with the blazing hot Egyptian sun over head, stayed busy entertaining tourists. Taxi? No way! Pick up trucks preside here and we all pile in the back except Mom. Mother hesitantly sits in front next to the driver.
I tug at Justin’s ankle. Again, in mumbling communication I tell him of the Finding Nemo fish and motion towards the floating counterpart. Deep below us lays the coral reef, now a dark haunted green at dusk. In the sunshine the site is breath taking. Brilliant blue backdrop of sea flaunts the bright contrasting colors of the reef. But this is nightfall. Sun burned legs and crowded beaches do not persist. As we swim out farther into deeper waters we encounter the edge of the reef. A cliff stretches hundreds of feet below us.
The day before our night time venture into the great Red, my father had gone on a diving trip into the Blue Hole. I now tell everyone: “And he saw a giant sea turtle!” and wish I had taken a diving course. But snorkeling will do for now I suppose.
My brother and I, hands clasped, froze, hovering in the shallow water. Peering out at us was a white eel, about a fore arms length and with a clever smile splashed across his face. I immediately thought “Christmas time” after recalling the Mr. Grinch Theme Song. “You’re a mean one, Mr. griiiiIIINCH, your as cuddly as a porcupine as friendly as an eel… I wouldn’t touch you with a.. 39 and a half foot poooolleee!!!”
Dad waved at us. He stood on the shoreline 100 meters away calling us to come in.
Our adventures had ended. I’ll cherish the fun times I spent with my brother there in the Red sea for a long time I’m sure.
OK! Looks like this blog needs some pictures! No fear! Nate the great is here! I will track down some photos and make a beatiful album for you wonderful readers out there.
Interesting rendition.
Do you want your vocabulary improvement book? You didn’t take it with you so I thought perhaps it was too difficult for you? It is college level. Let me know. Nate the Great I like that! In the old days I wanted to call you Justy as I have a cousin I like called Dusty though his name is Dustin. Brian is your middle name as I recall. Justin the Jester Justin the Busker (is that the right terminology?) (I hope to go hammock sp? soon –is a nonsequitor sp? like What’s that got to do with the price of tea in China in this case the new topic getting a backyard hammack has nothing to do with the subject and as you see I’m juggling topics. Hope you are getting rested up and having a great time in Eugene with all you family. Love, GiGi
